Charles and Ray Eames' experiments with plywood marked the start of their search for new means of allowing rigid materials to fit the contours of the human body. After various experiments to create a round coffee table, in 1946 Charles and Ray Eames came up with their "round coffee table with metal legs", a simple occasional table with a round ash plywood tabletop slightly raised at the edges and four slim tubular metal legs.
